The Story of Women Behind the Wheel in the Ride-Hailing Industry
On International Women’s Day, we celebrate the strength and determination of women everywhere, acknowledging their hard work and contributions across all fields. Natcharin Nujoy, a Maxim driver, shares her story of being a woman in a profession that was traditionally dominated by men. Her journey highlights the power of self-belief, perseverance, and the ability to inspire others along the way.
At 52, Natcharin has been driving for Maxim for a year. Alongside her full-time job, she drives her brown Suzuki Ertiga part-time to earn extra income. She discovered Maxim by chance and saw it as a way to make the most of her free time. Driving for Maxim has not only provided extra income but has also helped support her family, enabling her to manage daily expenses and plan for the future. At home, her eldest child has recently graduated and started working, while her youngest is still in elementary school.
Women remain underrepresented in the ride-hailing industry, with only 4.3% of all Maxim drivers in 2024 being female. Yet, Natcharin’s presence on the road is proof that women can thrive in this profession. She has even inspired some of her female passengers, who express interest in driving but worry about their skills or knowledge of routes. “They often tell me they’re afraid they won’t be good enough, but I always tell them we can all practice and improve,” Natcharin says. “You just have to trust yourself and keep an open mind. With time and effort, you can get better, just like anyone else.” Through her own experience, Natcharin shows that women can succeed in this profession just as much as men.
To succeed in this profession, Natcharin believes it’s important to be well-prepared, diligent, and prioritize safety. “We need to rest well, be ready, work hard, and always focus on the safety of our passengers,” she says. For her, being diligent means planning ahead, reviewing routes, checking traffic updates, and practicing shortcuts when possible. She sees every trip as an opportunity to learn and improve, keeping her skills sharp. Clear communication is also key, especially on airport trips, for managing time and traffic efficiently.
For other women considering becoming a Maxim driver, Natcharin advises dedication and caring for customers. “If you focus on your work and make sure your passengers are comfortable, you will do well,” she says. Many women worry about safety, but Natcharin encourages them to not be afraid. “You have to be cautious, but with the right training, driving is safe,” she adds. “Plus, each ride is controlled by the service and we have the in-app emergency number to contact Maxim support directly if needed”
Natcharin is excited to see more women joining the same profession. “It’s great to see more women driving, breaking barriers, and showing we can succeed just like anyone else,” she says.
As more women take the wheel, the ride-hailing industry continues to evolve. Natcharin’s story is just one example of how women are making their mark in a traditionally male-dominated field. With determination, hard work, and support from those around them, everyone can work toward their goals.
On International Women’s Day, Natcharin’s message to all women, especially those in underrepresented jobs, is simple, “Keep going. Don’t let anything stop you. Your hard work will inspire others to follow.”
